Logan Garage Doors FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions
Logan Garage Door Service

Q: My garage door won't open

A: The most common reason garage doors won't open are because the garage door opener is not functioning or the garage door spring is broken. If your garage door opener is not working, simply pull the manual or emergency release and open the garage. Then you should call a Logan garage door repair service technician to fix it.
If the spring is broken, opening the garage door manually is difficult or impossible. If your garage door is hard to open, do not force it, as this may cause further damage. Repairing your garage spring or garage opener may be dangerous and should only be repaired by a skilled professional.
Less common reasons your garage door won't function can include but not limited to a disengaged garage door opener, detached cables, or the door being off its runners.

Q: My garage door will not close

A: If you attempt to close the garage door and it begins to move slightly, then returns to an open position, this indicates an issue with the safety sensors. The sensors are most likely out of alignment or burned out completely. If burned out, then replacing them is necessary. Realignment of a safety sensors is easy for a Logan garage door opener repair technician.
In some cases the safety sensors are functioning correctly but, they are detecting an obstruction. In this case, removing the obstruction and your garage door will close normally.
Other reasons for a garage door that will not close are, the cables become detached or the door is off its runners. There might be other reasons the garage door will not close, however these are the most common.

Q: My garage door opener does not work

A: There are several reasons why a garage door opener does not function correctly:
  • A plastic driver gear in the motor has become worn out. If your opener is getting old, it might be a good time to simply replace the entire unit.
  • Safety sensors are burned out or misaligned. If misaligned, a repair technician can realign them. If sensors are burned out, replacement is necessary.
  • Circuit board is burned out. A repair technician will order the replacement circuit board. Garage door opener circuit boards may be expensive, and may take some time to get the part. You might prefer to replace the entire garage door opener.
In most circunstances, however, it's not the garage door opener that does not work, but the garage door itself.

Q: Why does the garage door make so much noise?

A: Garage doors are noisy resulting from a lack of routine maintenance. The garage door and the garage door opener have several moving parts that need to be oiled. A garage spring should be kept lubricated, and rollers have ball bearings that should be greased. Chains, pulleys, and sprockets in your garage door opener should be oiled, rails and trolleys should be greased. This should all be done minimal once a year, more if you use the garage door more than three times daily.

Q: I heard a loud noise in my garage, what was that?

A: Most likely you heard your garage door spring break. The spring does most of the lifting for your garage door, you may be unable to manually open the garage door. If it has a torsion spring system, the tube that runs the length of your garage door will be over the opening. If you have an extension spring system, the springs runs along the horizontal track. Garage door springs break due to wear and tear most springs generally last between 5,000 to 10,0000 cycles, once this number is reached, the spring will usualy break. If your garage door spring breaks, it is necessary to have it replaced.

Q: Is it possible to repair a broken spring?

A: Yes, however it is not recommended. Repairing a damaged spring can be very dangerous, and a repaired spring will most likely break again soon. The best option is to contact a garage spring replacement technician. With the proper parts and tools the spring can be replaced quickly, usually in less than 30 minutes.

Q: Can I insulate my garage door?

A: Yes, but use caution when you do. Depending on the type of insulation used, you may be adding too much weight on the garage door. Lighter insulation will usually not be a problem, but heavier high r-value insulation can damage your garage door opener. You can still use this kind of insulation, but you will need to recalibrate or even replace your garage door spring.

Q: Is it possible to repair a bent garage door?

A: That is difficult to answer without actually seeing the garage door, However, in most circumstances a bent garage door may be repaired as long as the door panels are not cracked or bent. If the garage door is cracked or bent, replacement would be the best solution. Repairs done would only be a temporary fix at best and would not last long. Furthermore, cracked garage doors are dangerous and can collapse without warning. Fortunately, it may not be necessary to replace the whole garage door – you may only need to replace one or two panels.

Q: Is it possible repair a one piece garage door?

A: This is difficult because one piece garage doors are no longer manufactured, so finding parts is  difficult. It is not generally a problem for minor repairs, however when major repairs are needed, most likely replacing the garage door is the only option. If you need a new garage door spring, you're in luck: Springs are still available, and a repair is not problem.

Q: Does a garage door need springs?

A: Yes. The springs do the heavy lifting that allow the garage door to open and close properly. Even if you have a garage door opener, you still need the spring. Motors are not designed to lift the full weight of the garage door. If the spring breaks, this will need to be replaced ASAP. Failure to do so will in time break your garage door opener and may even cause serious injuries.
